Black Hill Conservation Park

It has been a very busy year in the Black Hill Conservation park with 100s of hours of weed control work carried out by volunteers and contractors.

Work included:

  • Volunteer event in February chipping small Erica near the ridge track;
  • Follow-up hand chipping of Erica by contractors (following on from spraying and grubbing undertaken in 2024) near the ridge track in April;
  • Volunteer event in April at Ghost Tree Gully mainly focusing on hand pulling of boneseed and small olives;
  • Second volunteer event in August at Ghost Tree Gully focusing on hand pulling of boneseed and small olives;
  • Primary weed control by contractors in September hand pulling (and bagging) Ornithogalum and boneseed above Ghost Tree Gully;
  • Volunteer event in September working up from the Amber's Gully trailhead to the waterfall cutting and swabbing fennel and artichokes, hand pulling of small olives and removal of tangier pea;
  • Primary weed control by contractors in October (basal spraying of olives, but also spraying of dog rose, fruit trees and kurrajongs) from the Amber's Gully trailhead up to the waterfall;
  • Follow up weed control in October (mainly olives but also artichokes) from above the waterfall up to where the trail reaches the fire track;
  • Volunteer event in November working to the east of the fire water tank hand pulling boneseed, African daisy and small olives;
  • Primary weed control (slashing) of Moraea by contractors in November near ridge track - follow-up required in 2026;
  • Follow-up spraying and hand chipping of Erica by contractors near the ridge track in November;
  • Secondary weed control by contractors in December hand pulling (and bagging) remaining Ornithogalum at Ghost Tree Gully. Basal spraying of large olives in the area.

The impact of previous years work can be seen with recovery of the large gums in response to the Free a Tree program and native vegetation reestablishing itself in areas where Erica control has occurred.

I wish all a happy festive season and hope to see you next year at some of the volunteer events.
